There are two fundamental effects that occur after bariatric surgery:

  1. Physiological Effect: Feeling of satiety with little food occurs because the stomach volume has been reduced.
  2. Hormonal Effect: It occurs that significant decrease in the secretion of ghrelin (hunger hormone); so leptin (satiety hormone) produce an effect.

Without going into detail, we are going to explain the two mechanisms of effect. You can read detailed information about ghrelin and leptin within Useful Information section.

The fundamental benefit of bariatric surgery is that you can change your eating habits quickly after the operation –However, if you not follow the rules, it can turn into a disadvantage quickly. Especially, we hear very often from our patients that they do not miss their favorite foods and even do not want to eat them when they are in front of them. The main reason for this is the biochemical activity (hormone, enzyme, psychology) that occurs when the stomach's capacity is full.

In the short term, stopping eating when you feel full will greatly reduce the problems listed below:

  • Vomiting
  • Pain
  • Nausea
  • Feeling of something stuck in the throat

In the long term, it is important to stop eating when you feel full so as not to increase stomach volume.

Attention!

  • Do not keep your stomach empty for a long period of time. Drink enough water. Do not skip meals.
  • Eat slowly.
  • Chew enough.
  • Be choosy in eating solid and liquid foods.

Do not forget that the feeling of satiety appears early in these conditions. If you think you are not eating enough, you may continue to eat food after a while, but if this happens frequently, take precaution to prevent snacking mistakes.

Another situation is that patients who cannot eat their favorite food because they feel full immediately. Of course, this negative situation can lead to deprivation and demoralization in some people. However, it should be remembered that bariatric surgery is performed for health purposes, not for arbitrary purposes. Unfortunately, there is no surgery has been published in the literature that can lead to eat too much of popular meals and the maintenance of a healthy weight. -Also, food intake is limited in malabsorptive operations. Therefore, remember that it is a warning and a benefit to you to keep your morale and motivation high in these situations.
